Abstract

|
A histochemical study was done on the mucosubstance and alkaline posphatase and acid phosphatase of the mucosa of the duodenum, jejunum and colon in the fowl and dove. The mucosubstance was observed with alcian blue staining (pH 2.5), PAS reaction and combined staining of alcian blue (pH 2.5) and PAS. The alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase were observed with Gomori¢¥s modified methods.
The results were as follow:
1. The goblet cells of the mucosa of the intestinal tract were stained moderately to strongly with alcian blue but weakly to moderately with PAS and moderately to strongly with combined staining of alcian blue and PAS, but more strongly with alcian blue than PAS.
2. The surface and crypt upper epithelial cells were strongly positive, but crypt base epithelial cells were weakly positive in alkaline phosphatase reaction in the duodenum and jejunum and the surface epithelial cells were weakly positive, crypt epithelial cells were almost negative in alkaline phosphatase reaction in the colon.
3. The surface and crypt epithelial cells were almost negative in acid phosphatase reaction in the mucosa of the intestinal tract.
